Metrans, the rail logistics subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), and INTERPORT Servis s.r.o. have entered a joint project to modernise an intermodal terminal near Košice in eastern Slovakia, HHLA said in a news release.

The cooperation aims to create what the companies describe as a new logistics ecosystem that will strengthen the region at the eastern border of the European Union.

The new TIP Košice (Terminál Intermodálnej Prepravy – Intermodal Transport Terminal) is intended to become a key hub within Eastern Europe’s transport infrastructure.

According to the companies, it is planned as a model for integrated logistics development, sustainable growth and regional connectivity.

The partners intend to transform the site into a multifunctional logistics hub centred on one of Slovakia’s most advanced intermodal terminals, equipped with digital and automated technologies. The terminal’s dual-gauge infrastructure will combine standard- and broad-gauge tracks. Two gantry cranes are designed to handle goods arriving via broad gauge, including flows from Ukraine, and transfer them onto trains operating on the standard-gauge European network.

The companies state that the broader logistics ecosystem will offer shortened supply chains, new digital tools for managing logistics flows, employment opportunities for local communities, enhanced infrastructure and environmental standards and a platform for connecting businesses regionally and internationally.

The Košice terminal has been part of the Metrans network since 2008 and currently covers nearly 50,000 m². The new project expands capacity with additional handling and storage areas and will include two modern rail cranes. Completion is scheduled for 2027.

Metrans is a European rail logistics company operating as a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), a German port and logistics group.
