Must read

According to reports from local relevant authorities in the United States, on November 26 local time, a fire broke out in the engine room of the container ship “Chiquita Voyager” docked at the Port of Wilmington, USA. This incident resulted in four crew members being injured and hospitalized, with one of them sustaining more serious injuries.

At 9:28 AM on November 26, an emergency response was initiated when firefighters received an alarm about thick smoke emanating from the superstructure of the Liberia-flagged container ship. Upon arrival, they quickly assessed the situation and began firefighting operations.

A 23-year-old crew member received emergency treatment for suspected respiratory tract burns and was subsequently transported to Christiana Hospital in critical condition. Three other crew members, aged 27, 29, and 38, were also sent to the same hospital for treatment due to hand burns. However, their specific health conditions have not been disclosed.

The Wilmington Fire Department confirmed that all injured individuals were crew members of the ship. Firefighters entered the vessel to extinguish the fire and assist in the evacuation of personnel on board. Officials noted that the ship’s fire suppression system had been effectively activated, containing the fire within the engine room.

After approximately three hours of intense firefighting efforts, rescue personnel finally managed to bring the situation under control. The fire brigade remained on site for most of the day for monitoring. Currently, the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading a further investigation into this concerning incident to determine the cause of the fire.

Approximately 70 emergency responders participated in the crisis response efforts. This included multiple fire engines from the Wilmington Fire Department, as well as ambulances and specialized rescue teams from New Castle County Emergency Medical Services and other local fire departments, who provided mutual support.

Since becoming a major North American hub in 1988, Chiquita’s “Chiquita Voyager” has played a crucial role in connecting Central America with Wilmington, as part of Chiquita’s established shipping services.

Earlier this year, the Port of Wilmington announced plans to establish a longer-term partnership with Chiquita Brands, aiming to further enhance operational levels.

The port regularly receives shipments from Chiquita on a weekly basis, including bananas, pineapples, and various other agricultural products, which are distributed to over 200 million consumers across North America.

During the investigation into this fire incident on the ship, fire officials will maintain supervision until the situation is completely stabilized.
