Spain has been re-elected as a member of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The elections took place this Friday within the General Assembly being held these days in London, which was attended by the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente. In this way, Spain will be able to present its candidacy for the presidency of the Council, of which Víctor Jiménez has already been president since 2021. The elections will be held next December 4th.
Jiménez expressed his “satisfaction” for the support received in the Council elections and highlighted his intention to continue building and promoting “a sustainable, agile, and resilient maritime transport during the 2026-2027 biennium, which adopts green technologies and prioritizes the energy transition, digitalization, and greater international cooperation.”
In the elections held this Friday, the 40 members who will form the executive body of the IMO for the next two years were chosen. Spain is integrated into category B, which groups the 10 countries with the greatest interests in international trade. Since 1973, Spain has been a member of the IMO Council and, since 2001, has maintained its position in category B.
The Council is also composed of a category A which includes the 10 countries with the greatest interests in providing international shipping services, and a category C, which includes 20 countries by geographical representation.
