Outside the IMO Council Russia

The generalized “embargo” against Russia by the rest of the world’s countries in every sector of the economy continues. More specifically, Russia failed to gather the necessary votes to be reinstated to the IMO Council, despite the fact that it urged countries to support its candidacy. It is recalled that it had lost its position in 2023.

This result is another blow for Russia, which also failed in September to secure the “declared” election to the corresponding council of the United Nations aviation organization.

These developments are considered retaliation against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

As is known, the IMO, based in London, is responsible for regulating the safety and security of international shipping and the prevention of pollution, and consists of 176 member states. Moscow has been a member of the IMO since 1958 and had been a continuous member of the Council until 2023.

Russia was one of 48 countries vying for 40 positions for the two-year term on the Council which oversees the organization’s work.

Ukraine, which has openly expressed its opposition to Russia’s efforts in various UN organizations and was not a candidate for the Council, urged IMO member states not to support the candidacy, stating that Moscow “undermines global security and cannot claim a leadership role in the global governance of maritime transport.
