After the first year of execution of the “Priority Works for the Recovery of Urquiza Line Infrastructure” Project, signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina and the Structural Convergence Fund of MERCOSUR (FOCEM), 100% of the fastenings have been acquired and 30% of the rail transfer has been reached, reported Trenes Argentinos Carga (TAC).
The Executive Coordinator of the FOCEM Technical Unit (UTF), Luciano Wexell Severo, highlighted that “the Urquiza Line project has great projection, for all that it represents for Argentina and for its potential for railway integration with neighboring countries and with the world economy. It will be able to expand and improve the transport capacity of agricultural products, cement, and cellulose pulp, among others. Furthermore, it has the immense technical capacity of the company Belgrano Cargas y Logística SA (BCyL)”.
The statement comes after the latest contribution granted by FOCEM (of 1 million dollars), for the recovery works of the infrastructure of that strategic railway corridor.
According to official information, the expectation is that the project financed by FOCEM will double the cargo capacity of the Urquiza railway and contribute to the modernization of the infrastructure of the Mesopotamian region.

Meanwhile, BCyL is tendering the purchase of sleepers to later begin with the track improvements contemplated by the project.
The disbursement is part of the total of US$29.8 million financed by FOCEM for the recovery of 210 km of these railway tracks that are part of the route linking the provinces of Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Misiones.
This seeks to increase competitiveness and transport capacity since it is also the gateway to Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay, where a range of opportunities opens up for the Mesopotamian railway, adds the statement.
