Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar made statements regarding Turkey’s natural gas resources.
Minister Bayraktar stated that they contribute to energy supply security by diversifying source countries and supply routes in addition to domestic production in natural gas.
Minister Bayraktar conveyed that Turkey can receive LNG with 5 facilities, two of which are onshore LNG terminals and three of which are Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU), saying, “Our LNG regasification capacity, which was 34 million cubic meters per day in 2016 when we implemented the National Energy and Mining Policy, has now reached 161 million cubic meters with an approximately 5-fold increase.”
Half of the need from LNG
Minister Bayraktar declared, “As of today, Turkey has reached a point where it can import almost half of the natural gas it needs as LNG via ships.”
Noting that on days when consumption reaches its peak, Turkey needs an average of 330 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, Bayraktar said, “Our LNG capacity is sufficient to meet the entire amount of natural gas our citizens need in their homes, even on the coldest winter days when consumption peaks.”
Stating that besides increasing regasification capacity, they have increased the number of entry points in the national natural gas grid to 14, Bayraktar also shared the information, “In total, we have increased our daily gas intake capacity to 495 million cubic meters.”
The liquefaction process of natural gas is carried out to reduce the volume of the gas in international trade and make it easily transportable. In the liquefaction process, natural gas is cooled and turned into a liquid, and the volume of the gas shrinks by approximately 600 times. With its LNG facilities and FSRU units that can regasify liquefied natural gas, Turkey, thanks to this capability, both has the opportunity to receive LNG from anywhere in the world and gains an advantage in terms of cost.
