HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on December 1 officially launched the merged shipbuilding entity formed from the pre-merger HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, according to the company.
All legal and corporate procedures have been completed, and the unified firm began operations on December 1.
The company has set a mid-term goal to achieve annual revenues of ₩37 trillion by 2035. The merger combines capabilities previously held separately: large commercial shipbuilding and existing defense capacity on one side, and mid-sized and specialized vessels, including naval ships, on the other. By consolidating yard infrastructure, engineering and design functions, and workforce expertise, HD Hyundai aims to broaden its product mix and create operational “synergies.”
A central objective of the new structure is an expansion in defense shipbuilding. The company aims to increase defense-related revenue roughly tenfold to ₩10 trillion by 2035. Some of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard’s four docks will be reallocated to defense and special-purpose vessels, supported by integrated R&D and design teams. The company also intends to extend technologies developed for mid-sized ships to large vessels, including LNG, carbon-capture carriers, and ammonia or hydrogen-powered ships.
The merger is positioned as a response to recent consolidation among major Chinese and Japanese shipbuilders and is aimed at strengthening competitiveness across commercial and defense markets. Shareholders approved the merger plan during extraordinary general meetings on October 23, with 98.54% voting in favor at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and 87.56% at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the merger in September, finding no antitrust concerns because the companies were already affiliated. If the 2035 revenue and defense-segment targets are met, the combined company could significantly reshape competitive dynamics in the global shipbuilding industry.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is part of a South Korean industrial group operating across shipbuilding and heavy equipment. The company managed multiple docks and maintained engineering capacity suited to customized shipbuilding programs. Its integration into HD Hyundai Heavy Industries follows a broader restructuring strategy within the parent group.
