EDF inks long-term charter for X-DF-propelled LNG newbuild

Must read

France LNG Shipping has signed a long-term charter contract for a 174,000-m3, X-DF-propelled LNG carrier with EDF LNG Shipping, the transport arm of Electricité de France (EDF)

Ordered from South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), the LNG carrier will be delivered in 2025. France LNG Shipping is a 50-50 joint venture between NYK Line and France’s Geogas LNG.

The newbuild LNG carrier, which will fly the French flag, will have an overall length of 297 m, beam of 46 m, with a gross tonnage of about 118,300 tonnes. Propulsion power will be supplied by a WinGD two-stroke, dual-fuel, Otto-cycle X-DF engine. Air Liquide will supply its Turbo-Brayton refrigeration system that can tap surplus boil-off gas, while GTT will design the vessel’s membrane cargo containment system.

This is NYK’s fourth LNG carrier on a long-term time-charter contract with the EDF Group.

NYK Line executive officer Hironobu Watanabe said NYK Line was not only pleased to sign another long-term charter contract for a new LNG carrier with EDF LNG Shipping, but also the deal has “great significance for further promoting the NYK Group’s ESG management. We will continue to provide EDF with stable LNG transport services under our strong partnership, contributing to energy transitions around the world.”

In March, HSHI delivered a similar vessel, 174,000-m3Elisa Aquila, into a long-term charter for Milan-based energy company Edison SpA, which is controlled by the EDF Group. The LNG carrier is managed by Gazocean, jointly owned by NYK Line and Geogas LNG.
