The logistics industry as a driver of professionals

«Conectando personas y mejorando vidas», is part of DHL’s motto as a logistics company, which integrates an essential industry responsible for commercial transport between nations and continents. According to the Central Bank, in 2024 Chile’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 2.6%, growth mainly driven by exports. A result that rewards the constant effort of those behind the operations: its workers.

Logistics is multisectoral and transversal, and each of the people who make up its areas has internalized the value of this industry in their DNA. «Our people recognize how our work impacts individuals, families and countries. At DHL Express, we not only care about employee commitment, but also about their leadership roles in the business within a balanced and healthy environment, which makes us understand the reasons that keep them in the organization», says Jaime Dacaret, country manager of DHL Express Chile.

Recently, the company was recognized by Great Place To Work as the Best Company to Work For in Chile 2024, in the category of 251 to 1,000 employees. Faced with this distinction, the executive highlights the work of the entire team that makes up the company. «Our staff, who are the ones who face arduous workdays day after day, deserve to be fairly rewarded. The proposal is simple: that they choose every day to belong to this business».

The human being is always in search of belonging to a place that offers meaning to pursue their challenges, as well as being able to live the purpose that companies propose.

«This has become our pillar and a flag to drive actions that empower our team. Fair compensation, development plans that are directly related to their career plan, and periodic conversations to keep us on track are priorities to maintain an optimal environment where all our people are aware of their value in the company», explains Dacaret.

In that sense, it is difficult to precisely establish what makes a place become the best to work. However, for Dacaret, respect, results and equality are paramount values that complement each other so that there are benefits for both the employee and the brand.

«We must understand that our people represent us and the spirit they transmit is the one we as companies also give them. This is how the pillars of development opportunity, meaningful benefits, and promotion of care for their physical and mental health are key for mutual progress», he adds.

There are different challenges that the industry must face today, but teleworking is undoubtedly the most complex, according to the executive. Although he considers it part of the flexibility that emerged during the covid-19 pandemic, he clarifies that not all sectors can adapt to it.

According to a study by Clapes UC, the number of people working from home decreased by 3.2% recently, but it remains a modality that many sectors have internalized.

In contrast, hybrid work has gained greater traction in the country: according to WeWork and Michael Page, 76% of Chilean workers perform their roles under this dynamic.

“More and more people want to opt for this benefit, and the reality is that it cannot be offered in all positions—and in the vast majority of logistics roles—because the business is in the field, in the warehouse, and on the streets,” details Dacaret.

DHL Express was also recognized by Great Place To Work as one of the Best Places to Work for Women 2024, in the category of 251 to 1,000 employees. The company applauds the value of women in applying for higher leadership roles in the business, but the equity challenges lean toward more operational areas.

“Today, the roles with the greatest female presence are those that maintain a direct relationship with clients, but we have grown slightly in operational tasks such as driving or warehousing, which we call ‘entry-level roles,’ where there are fewer applications,” adds Dacaret.

Regarding the participation of the young population, Dacaret highlights that 80% of its employees belong to the Millennial and Gen Z generations. “Logistics is a dynamic sector that has the ability to be attractive to young talent—those who want to be in constant motion, thinking of new ways to innovate, questioning processes, and implementing new ones. This industry is increasingly incorporating new talent, in response to careers associated with logistics that younger people are choosing to pursue,” the expert concludes.

Faced with the challenges, advances, and leadership that the industry shows today in its human resources area, supporting the environment, seizing opportunities, and empowering the allies who are in day-to-day management is the legacy that the sector must continue to strengthen. Investing in the well-being of employees, from different angles, is key to turning logistics into a career of future and stability.
