The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has issued a reminder that registration closes on Friday, 8 May, for an International Maritime Organization (IMO) technical seminar focused on methane-based fuels.

The seminar, scheduled for Tuesday, 12 May, is being organised by the IMO’s Future Fuels and Technology Project. According to IBIA, the event aims to strengthen understanding and facilitate the exchange of insights on the production, safe application, and blending of methane-based fuels, including LNG, biomethane, and e-methane.

Participants can attend either in person at IMO Headquarters or remotely. Registration is available through the IBIA website, with full programme details accessible on the IMO website.

The seminar comes as the maritime industry continues to explore alternative fuel options to meet decarbonisation targets. Methane-based fuels, particularly LNG, have gained traction as transitional fuels in the shipping sector, though questions remain about methane slip and the long-term role of such fuels in achieving net-zero emissions.

The IMO’s Future Fuels and Technology Project was established to support member states in understanding and implementing emerging fuel technologies as part of the organisation’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy.
