The Port of Antwerp-Bruges faces challenges considered “major” to address in terms of sustainability, according to the interim CEO of the port authority, Rob Smeets, in the annual ESG report.

In this regard, the head of the facility stated that “the challenges we face today are major. Economically, socially, and ecologically, we are at a turning point. The European Green Deal sets clear requirements in terms of sustainability. We fully assume that responsibility, because it is necessary and because we believe it is possible, because we are convinced that a sustainable and future-oriented industry is supported by affordable and innovative chemistry.”

“That remains our most powerful response to international competition, with instruments such as the Clean Industrial Deal, which paves the way toward a climate-neutral and economically viable future. That ambition requires specific investments. We fully commit to climate neutrality, biodiversity, safety, health, mobility, and environmental quality. We do this with concrete projects, transparent objectives, and a climate plan aimed at total neutrality by 2050,” said Smeets.

“Our transition projects are profound and innovative: they prioritize renewable energy sources and drastically reduce environmental impact. Think of our fleet of tugboats operating on hydrogen, methanol, and electricity: a tangible example of how innovation and sustainability reinforce each other,” stated the CEO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

“Our port is a crucial link in the global supply chain, but it is also a place where the future is built. Where decisions are made that have an impact for generations. That is why we choose an approach that is both ambitious and realistic. We are building a port that reduces its ecological footprint, expands its social impact, and maintains its economic strength,” said the head.

“Our sustainability strategy is not an endpoint, but a process. A continuous movement toward a future-proof port. We measure our progress, evaluate our actions, and correct where necessary. We keep learning, growing, and improving. Because sustainability is not static, but demands a dynamic attitude,” Smeets emphasized.
