Contship takes a step forward towards decarbonisation with the introduction of the first fully electric port tractor at the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT).

The new vehicle will be operated by Hannibal for internal transport within the terminal, as part of a pilot project aimed at driving the progressive electrification of the fleet of quay tractors and reducing direct emissions (Scope 1) generated by port operations.

The use of electric tractors is particularly suitable for terminal environments: operations are carried out near the charging infrastructure, while the high frequency of starts and stops maximises the benefits of regenerative braking. The zero-emission unit also guarantees optimised energy consumption during container handling manoeuvres. Furthermore, the reduction of noise and vibrations contributes to safer and more comfortable working conditions, improving both productivity and operational quality.

The investment was co-financed under the PNRR Green Ports programme, through a specific call for proposals promoted and managed by the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority. This initiative is part of the broader Green Ports programme: renewable energies and energy efficiency measures in ports, funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds, whose objective is to reduce CO? emissions and improve air quality in port areas.

“The energy transition programme we have launched aims to decarbonise port activities. Specifically, the Authority has made its expertise in managing PNRR funds available to terminal operators, thus enabling them to seize the opportunities offered by the Green Ports initiative for the benefit of the port system,” commented Simone Pacciardi, Head of EU Relations, EU Project Management and PNRR Funds of the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority.

This initiative is part of Contship’s broader roadmap for technological innovation and sustainability at the La Spezia terminal, which includes process digitalisation, infrastructure development and equipment modernisation with the aim of maximising operational efficiency in all areas.
