Initiative to involve industry operators promoted by the Department of Transportation and the Maritime Administration (Marad)
Proposals for the development of small modular nuclear reactors intended for commercial maritime transport. They have begun to be collected by the Secretary of Transportation, Sean P. Duffy, together with the Maritime Administration (Marad), inviting designers and operators to submit by next August 5 proposals for the development of a mini reactor model, with the aim of revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry, reducing costs, and ensuring energy supremacy.
Industry operators are particularly urged to identify an efficient system architecture, with simplified solutions to introduce nuclear energy into entire fleets and logistics networks, initiating the production of this type of reactor in U.S. shipyards in view of creating teams of skilled workers and new certification standards.
