Two shipyard workers dead! Fall from height inside ship cabin

On the afternoon of May 11, an accident occurred at Asakawa Shipbuilding in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, resulting in the deaths of two male workers conducting ship maintenance operations.

The accident happened around 2:10 p.m. local time, when相关人员 reported to the local fire department: “Two people fell from a height of about 10 meters inside the ship.” Firefighters arrived at the scene and found the two male workers lying in the cargo hold of an LPG vessel, where they were confirmed dead.

According to police, the deceased are company employee Yagi Toyohiro (59), a resident of Namikata-cho, Imabari City, and company employee Niida Yuto (19), a resident of Yamaji, Imabari City.

At the time of the incident, the two were working with other workers on maintenance operations for an LPG carrier. They had opened the manhole cover on top of the cargo hold to perform maintenance work and entered the hold to carry out nitrogen purging operations.

Police are currently investigating the detailed cause of the accident.
