Centrica Energy has secured International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Trader with Storage status, enabling the business to trade ISCC-backed bio-LNG with customers across international markets.

The approval covers sustainability, traceability and chain-of-custody requirements, allowing verified attributes to be documented and transferred through the value chain.

Centrica’s trading arm stated that the development brings together its UK and European biomethane origination activities with access to the global LNG market. The company can now support bio-LNG supply chains that cover liquefaction, storage, and cross-border transactions.

The energy trader highlighted maritime fuel and road transport as two key markets for the product. It noted that bio-LNG can be used in existing LNG engines and fuel systems, helping customers address lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.

Centrica Energy also linked the approval to compliance needs under FuelEU Maritime, the EU Renewable Energy Directive and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

The ISCC status enables compliant bio-LNG to be offered at any ISCC-approved LNG terminal in the European Union through a virtual liquefaction route. Centrica stated that this provides customers with flexible access to verified supply while maintaining traceability across storage and trade activities.

ISCC covers sustainable biomass, biofuels and renewable gases. The Trader with Storage scope applies to products handled under mass balance and traceability rules.

Centrica Energy is the trading and optimisation arm of Centrica plc, headquartered in Windsor, UK. The business manages commodity risk and sources energy for Centrica Group’s supply activities, with markets including power, gas, LNG and green certificates.
