The International Maritime Organization has completed GloNoise Partnership national workshops in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, India, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago, with nearly 200 participants from government agencies, academia, research institutions and the shipping industry, according to IMO.

The workshops, held from March to April 2026, also included participants from Georgia, Madagascar and Mexico. The programme focused on practical training in assessing underwater radiated noise from shipping, identifying potential hotspots and reviewing mitigation measures at national level.

Participants used the new Underwater Radiated Noise Toolkit, developed by the GloNoise Partnership, including its training modules and modelling tools.

The toolkit is organised in three levels: basic knowledge, simplified screening and more advanced assessment. IMO said it will be finalised later this year and remain available to member states to support implementation of the revised IMO guidelines on reducing underwater radiated noise from shipping.

The next step will be a global webinar on the toolkit for all IMO member states.

The International Maritime Organization is a United Nations specialized agency responsible for global standards covering the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

The GloNoise Partnership is a GEF-funded project led by IMO in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility. The two-year project covers six lead pilot countries — Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, India, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago — and three twinning partner countries — Georgia, Madagascar and Malaysia.
