The green transition of the fleet of ships operating on regular lines is progressing at a rapid pace.
According to available data from the World Shipping Council, dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers (in operation and on order) now amount to 1,204, representing private investments of over $180 billion.
As of last March, dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers operating in international waters reached 440, marking an annual increase of 65%, while the orderbook consisted of 764 such ships.
Dual-fuel ships accounted for 78% of containership orders, 94% of vehicle carrier orders, and 17% of orders for the rest of the fleet.
“These ships are long-term investments, built with flexibility in mind,” said WSC President and CEO Joe Kramek. “The ships being built today will remain in operation for decades, and the ability to operate on different fuels helps reduce risk, enhance energy security, and support more resilient global supply chains,” he added.
