On the morning of May 15, President Xi Jinping held a small-scale meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at Zhongnanhai.
In late spring and early summer, Zhongnanhai was lush with greenery and vibrant vegetation. When Trump arrived, Xi Jinping warmly welcomed him. The two heads of state walked and talked, occasionally stopping to admire the ancient, towering trees and various roses in the garden.
Xi Jinping noted that President Trump’s visit was a historic and landmark one. Together, they had defined a new positioning for a constructive and stable strategic relationship between China and the United States, reached important consensus on maintaining stable economic and trade relations, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, and properly addressing each other’s concerns, and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues. The visit was conducive to promoting mutual understanding, deepening mutual trust, and enhancing the well-being of the peoples of both countries. It also once again demonstrated that achieving peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between China and the United States on the basis of mutual respect, and finding the right way to get along, is what the peoples of both countries desire and what people around the world hope for. President Trump wants to make America great again, and I am committed to leading the Chinese people to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. China and the United States can promote each other’s development and revitalization by strengthening cooperation. Both sides should implement the important consensus we have reached, cherish the current hard-won positive momentum, keep the direction, eliminate interference, and promote the stable development of bilateral relations.
Trump expressed his great gratitude to President Xi Jinping for inviting him to Zhongnanhai. This visit to China was a very successful one, attracting worldwide attention and being unforgettable. The two sides formed a series of important consensuses, reached multiple agreements, and resolved many issues, which were very beneficial to both countries and the world. President Xi Jinping is my old friend, and I have great respect for him. We have established a good relationship. The U.S.-China relationship is very important and will certainly get better and better. I am willing to continue sincere and in-depth communication with President Xi Jinping and eagerly look forward to hosting President Xi Jinping in Washington.
