The National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration of Peru (Sunat), within the framework of its process of modernization and strengthening of customs control, put into operation two high-technology container scanners at the Multipurpose Port Terminal of Chancay. The units were donated by the United States Embassy.

The above was carried out with the objective of streamlining lawful trade and strengthening the security of the logistics chain in foreign trade, which in turn contributes to the competitiveness of the South American country.

The implementation of these scanners will allow optimizing the inspection of goods without the need to physically open the containers. This would reduce times, logistics costs and strengthen the security of the supply chain.

In this context, the head of Sunat, Javier Franco Castillo, highlighted that the equipment will improve control capacity, increasing the efficiency of goods inspection.

Regarding the characteristics of the donated equipment, these correspond to high-energy X-ray scanners, designed for real-time cargo inspection. Their technology allows identifying densities, structures and possible irregularities inside the containers, facilitating the detection of illicit or incorrectly declared goods, without the need for physical intervention.

The implementation of these scanners in Chancay complements the technological infrastructure already installed by Sunat in other strategic points of the country, such as the land border in Tacna and the port terminals of Callao and Paita.

Javiera Franco Castillo highlighted that the implementation of these non-intrusive inspection scanners is a very important milestone in the modernization process of the Customs Administration, “which will allow us to improve our control capacity, increasing the efficiency of goods inspection without affecting the fluidity of foreign trade.”

The Multipurpose Port Terminal of Chancay has shown a progressive evolution. Since the start of operations, 425,427 containers have been moved, with transshipment being the regime that represents 47% (200,046 containers) of the total moved. En el año 2025 las importaciones por el recinto portuario de Chancay generaron una recaudación equivalente a USD 277 millones, mientras que en lo que va del 2026 (enero a mayo) se ha registrado una recaudación de aproximadamente USD 161 millones.
