Kuala Lumpur-based offshore support vessel (OSV) owner Perdana Petroleum announced plans to invest $33.94 million in the construction of two anchor-handling /supply (AHTS) vessels as part of a fleet rejuvenation programme.

The company has awarded the shipbuilding contracts to China’s Aulong Shipbuilding. The new vessels, each measuring 61.8m in length and featuring a 60-tonne bollard pull, will be classed by RINA. Construction will be financed through a combination of internal funds and bank borrowings.

Delivery of the vessels is scheduled for the third and fourth quarters of the company’s 2028 financial year. Perdana Petroleum said the vessels will primarily serve Malaysia’s domestic oil and gas sector, as well as regional offshore markets.

Managing Director Jamalludin Obeng described the investment as a significant milestone for the company, noting that it marks its first newbuild order since 2012. He said the decision comes amid improving conditions in the offshore support vessel market and forms part of efforts to modernise the fleet and strengthen long-term competitiveness.

Obeng added that the OSV market is showing signs of recovery, supported by sustained upstream activity, improved industry fundamentals, and firmer charter rates across certain vessel segments.
