On the afternoon of June 29, the 7th China Seafarers’ Skills Competition concluded successfully in Zhoushan, Zhejiang. Li Qingzhong, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese Seafarers’ and Construction Workers’ Union, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech. Fan Yonghui, Deputy Director of the Maritime Safety Administration of the Ministry of Transport, delivered a speech and announced the closing. Relevant leading guests presented awards to the winning teams and contestants.
After several days of intense competition, the team from China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited won first place in the ocean-going enterprise group, the team from Dalian Maritime University won first place in the maritime academy group, and the team from the Shipping Branch of Zhangjiagang Port Group Co., Ltd. won first place in the inland river enterprise group. Shi Junpeng from Shandong Port Group Co., Ltd. won first place in the individual competition for able seamen, Li Debin from Xingtong Shipping Co., Ltd. won first place in the individual competition for motormen, and Chu Yifan from the Yangtze River Pilot Center won first place in the individual competition for pilots.
It is reported that the scale of participation and the number of events in this competition both set new records. A total of over 620 contestants from 46 teams and 132 individual participants from national shipping enterprises and maritime academies competed in 18 events. For the first time, this competition added individual events for pilots, able seamen, and motormen, incorporated theoretical tests on green and intelligent shipping, and optimized some events to comprehensively assess the contestants’ comprehensive abilities. The competition model closely aligned with the concept of intelligent development, incorporating new equipment applications such as intelligent simulator assessments, robot guidance, smart glasses check-in, and drone officiating, empowering the competition to be fair and efficient through technology.
The competitive level of this event improved significantly, with multiple competition records being broken. Particularly noteworthy was the triathlon event for the academy group, where the overall performance of the top five contestants improved by more than 20 seconds. The event garnered widespread attention and discussion across the internet, with the total viewership of related live streams and clips exceeding 20 million.
Since its inception in 2011, the China Seafarers’ Skills Competition has focused on the vocational skill needs of seafarers, promoting training and development through competition, and has discovered and cultivated a group of practitioners and academy talents with excellent comprehensive qualities. The organizers stated that through the competition, participating teams demonstrated superb professional skills, rigorous professional conduct, and a spirit of striving for excellence, effectively bridging the gap between the public and the seafarer community, deepening understanding and respect for the seafarer profession, and presenting the positive achievements of the high-quality development of China’s seafarer workforce from multiple dimensions.
