LA SPEZIA – Operational start of the procedure for the dredging of the third port basin and the navigable channel of the port of La Spezia, in an intervention destined to redesign the full accessibility of the port to latest-generation ships.
The president of the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority, Bruno Pisano, signed, on June 19th last, the measure that assigns the negotiated procedure for the stipulation of a two-year framework agreement relating to the works, marking a key step in the implementation phase of the project.
The intervention concerns two strategic areas: the third port basin, between Molo Fornelli and the Terminal del Golfo, and the navigable channel that connects the western mouth of the breakwater to the port of La Spezia. The objective is to bring the seabed to a depth of -15 meters, a necessary condition to allow the safe entry of latest-generation container ships.
The tender procedure concluded with the identification of the most economically advantageous offer by the Commission, which evaluated the proposals received within the deadlines. The temporary grouping of companies led by Società Italiana Dragaggi SpA, as the lead partner, with Dott. Carlo Agnese SpA and Agnese Costruzioni Srl as partners, was awarded the outcome.
Another consortium composed of Fincosit Srl together with the local company Società Edilizia Tirrena had presented itself for comparison. The outcome of the tender rewards an operator with consolidated experience in the dredging sector, an element considered decisive in the technical evaluation.
The framework agreement provides for the subsequent stipulation of a normative contract that will allow the AdSP to activate, over the next two years, individual application contracts based on the operational needs of the port. Among the first planned interventions is the dredging of the first lot of the third basin, functional to the development of the new Ravano terminal and the access of container ships.

The maximum value of the agreement exceeds 68 million euros, confirming the strategic relevance of the operation within the port’s infrastructural adaptation plan.
“At the end of the works, the seabed of the third basin will reach a depth of -15 meters, exactly that provided for by the Port Master Plan. This is a very important piece to guarantee the future competitiveness of the port. Following this measure, in fact, other investments will be developed by various parties: the LSCT terminal (Contship Group) will be able to start the expansion works of the Ravano and the Terminal del Golfo (Tarros Group) will be able to do the same. The seabed adaptation program provides for further dredging in the first basin, in the area in front of Molo Garibaldi, to accommodate the new, technologically advanced ships at the new cruise pier under construction on Calata Paita which will be completed by the end of the year”.
With this operation, the port of La Spezia takes a further step in the infrastructural adaptation path necessary to support the growth of container traffic and the evolution of new-generation vessels, within a framework of investments involving terminal operators and logistics chains in the area.
