Unlike its ‘cousin’ Venice, in the port of Ravenna the first half closed on very different values compared to those of a year earlier, with growth of 5.9% to 14,109,442 tonnes of cargo handled.
Strong was the contribution of petroleum products with 2,078,165 tonnes (+24.8%), solid bulk with 6,021,270 tonnes (+5.6%) and general cargo with 3,135,480 tonnes (+5.2%), but containers also grew (1,268,341 tonnes, +2.9%; 112,927 TEU, +1.5%) and ro-ro (838,040 tonnes, +4.5%; 34,038 trailers, +3.2%) and automotive took off with 14,113 cars (+206.1%) and 6,489 other vehicles (+105.2%). Only non-petroleum liquid products fell (by 18.4%), with 768,146 tonnes. Cruise traffic was in the spotlight, with 123,323 passengers (+58.2%).
Going into detail, the Port System Authority highlighted: “The agri-food sector (foodstuffs and agricultural products), with 2,937,744 tonnes (+1%) of cargo, is substantially in line with the first 6 months of 2025. In particular, cereals, with 1,204,578 tonnes, recorded an increase of 7.6%, flours, amounting to 561,183 tonnes, fell by 7.4%, landings of oilseeds, with 524,854 tonnes, show a decrease of 6.9% compared to 2025, and animal and vegetable oils, with a throughput of 305,463 tonnes, decreased by 20.9%. Building materials recorded an overall throughput of 2,400,446 tonnes, up 8.3% compared to the same period in 2025. Raw materials for the production of ceramics in the Sassuolo district also grew, with 2,104,482 tonnes handled (+6.4%). While metallurgical products, with 3,034,255 tonnes, are up 3.2% compared to the same period in 2025”.
“I can only express satisfaction with the official data for the first half, alongside which there are also good estimates for the month of July,” said the President of the Port System Authority, Francesco Benevolo. “All the commodity sectors in which we are leaders are recording positive performances. The trend of the Motorways of the Sea with the Ravenna-Catania route is interesting, and overall the results of the various types of traffic developed by the port are satisfactory. It is essential in this delicate phase of growth of the port of Ravenna that the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Emilia-Romagna Region support the significant investments needed to complete the port hub and implement the intermodal connection networks, so as not to slow down the development of this essential national logistics node.”
