Movements in and out are being recorded within the Corsica Ferries fleet. According to what was learned by SHIPPING ITALY, the company controlled by Pierre Mattei (who is not commenting at the moment) has just completed the sale of the ro-pax vessel Mega Express Five to the companyTarco Marine of Dubai, the same company that in past years had also taken over the ferries Corsica Marina Seconda and Corsica Victoria.
Mega Express Five, built by the Japanese shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1993, has a gross tonnage of 28,000 tonnes, a length of 177 meters, a width of 25, a cargo capacity of 1,400 linear meters in the garage, 276 cabins, 1,800 passengers and a speed of 26 knots. In recent years, the ferry has always been employed on routes connecting southern France with Corsica and with Golfo Aranci in Sardinia.
Its place in the fleet seems will be taken by the vessel Stena Vision which has just entered the Mediterranean coming from Northern Europe and is currently stationed off Gibraltar. This ferry, until now owned by Stena Line, built by the Polish shipyard Stocznia in 1987 and subsequently subject to refitting work in 1999 and 2010, has a length of 175 meters, a width of 30, a gross tonnage of 38,700 tonnes, a speed of 20 knots, capacity to host 1,700 passengers and 570 cars in the garage. In the recent past, it was operational on the connection between Rosslare and Cherbourg between France and Ireland.
Still regarding Corsica Ferries, the recent news (which re-emerged last September) should not be forgotten, that the shipping company is looking to the Far East to commission the construction of new ferries. Indeed, news had come from China that the company, after the announcements from the pre-Covid period, is preparing to start its investment program in newbuild ro-pax ships with a tender to award the related shipbuilding contract having sounded out some Asian shipyards. The technical specifications of the project renamed “Bastia-max” are: 180 meters in length (a size capable of guaranteeing flexibility and safe access to the port of Bastia) and capacity to load and transport 500 cars and 2,200 passengers on board with 500 cabins available.
