AD Ports Group Achieves First STS LNG Bunkering at Khalifa Port

Must read

AD Ports Group has successfully completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at Khalifa Port, marking a significant move toward decarbonizing the maritime sector and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading hub for alternative marine fuels. As the Group’s flagship deep-water port, Khalifa Port plays a pivotal role in this achievement, which underscores AD Ports Group’s commitment to advancing the UAE’s clean energy leadership and promoting sustainable maritime operations both regionally and globally.

The groundbreaking LNG bunkering was conducted as part of a simultaneous operation (SIMOPS) involving the container vessel MSC Thais, which was berthed at Abu Dhabi Terminals. During the operation, the vessel received LNG fuel from the Green Zeebrugge, a dedicated LNG bunker vessel operated by international marine fuel supplier Monjasa.

This simultaneous transfer of LNG fuel and cargo is a complex and technically demanding operation that showcases AD Ports Group’s ability to seamlessly integrate advanced services into port logistics. The success of this initiative demonstrates not only the Group’s robust infrastructure and safety protocols but also its commitment to enabling access to cleaner, lower-carbon fuels within the maritime industry.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is considered a key transitional fuel in global efforts to reduce maritime emissions. Compared to conventional marine fuels, LNG provides a substantial environmental advantage by significantly lowering emissions of greenhouse gases, sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter.

This cleaner fuel option aligns closely with both industry decarbonisation objectives and global environmental goals, including those outlined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy.

Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group, emphasized the importance of safe, sustainable operations:

“By adhering to the highest safety and environmental standards, AD Ports Group and Monjasa are ensuring that shipowners have reliable access to a diversified fuel mix that supports their decarbonisation objectives. AD Ports Group will continue to explore and implement forward-looking solutions that drive progress toward global sustainability goals.”

The STS bunkering operation was carried out in full alignment with internationally recognized safety and operational standards, adhering to LNG bunkering protocols and guidelines established by leading regulatory bodies, including:

This ensures the operation meets stringent global benchmarks for safe, secure, and environmentally responsible marine fuel handling.

Following this successful launch, AD Ports Group and Monjasa plan to extend LNG bunkering services across all commercial ports in Abu Dhabi, including the provision of LNG fuel to cruise vessels at Zayed Port.

In addition to LNG, AD Ports Group offers a comprehensive marine fuel portfolio, which includes:

This diversification enables shipowners and operators to choose fuel solutions that best meet their operational, economic, and environmental needs.

With this achievement, AD Ports Group not only accelerates the adoption of sustainable marine fuels but also reaffirms Abu Dhabi’s strategic leadership in the global energy transition. The Group’s innovative approach to integrating green fuel solutions within its port operations aligns with its broader mission to contribute to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 agenda and set new standards for sustainable trade and logistics.
