The AdSP of the Western Ligurian Sea and that of the Eastern Ligurian Sea announced today the signing of an agreement for the use of marine sediments from dredging in the two ports of the former—those of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara—in the new breakwater of Genoa.
More specifically, the agreement, the two entities explain, “regulates the delivery and reuse of materials resulting from dredging operations in the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara, as provided for in Article 5 of Legislative Decree No. 153 of October 17, 2024.” The operation involves the recovery and reuse, in a first phase, of 500,000 cubic meters of already characterized material, with the expectation of delivering additional quantities of materials as outlined in the dredging plan for the three-year period 2025-2027. According to the two authorities, the agreement will reduce reliance on disposal and limit the extraction of new raw materials.
The delivery plan, jointly developed by the two entities—adds the note—establishes quantities, timelines, and operational methods, “ensuring rigorous verification of the suitability of the materials in compliance with current regulations, traceability, and controlled management of each phase.” The agreement, according to the two AdSPs, “represents a virtuous example that could encourage similar initiatives in other Italian and European ports.”
The agreement establishes a case “unique in the national landscape, demonstrating the ability of Ligurian institutions to work systematically and apply the principles of the circular economy in major infrastructure projects. This agreement is not just a technical accord but a model of shared vision that inextricably links port development to the environmental sustainability of works,” commented Matteo Paroli, President of the AdSP of the Western Ligurian Sea.
Also pleased with the conclusion of the agreement was the Special Commissioner of the AdSP of the Eastern Ligurian Sea, Bruno Pisano, who thanked Paroli for the “valuable willingness” that “allowed the details of this act to be defined in a short time, a sign of renewed and strategic collaboration between the two Ligurian AdSPs,” as well as a “fundamental step to advance the development projects of the port of La Spezia.”
