Aid Ship Sets Sail for Gaza Again Following Repairs in Greece

Must read

According to a recent publication by Reuters, an international flotilla aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza has resumed its voyage after spending several days in Greek waters for necessary repairs.

The organizers have announced that the mission now comprises 47 civilian vessels, including contributions from Greece. They expressed their determination, stating they sail “with hope in their hearts” for the people of Gaza.

This flotilla features approximately 40 Italian participants alongside activists from various countries, notably including Swedish climate advocate Greta Thunberg. Despite warnings from multiple governments regarding potential dangers, the mission is set to deliver essential supplies to Gaza within the week.

Last Wednesday, while navigating international waters near Crete, the flotilla faced an attack involving drones equipped with stun grenades and irritants. Fortunately, while some vessels sustained damage during this incident, there were no reported injuries.

Earlier statements from Israel indicated a commitment to employing all necessary measures to prevent any ships from reaching Gaza. The blockade has been justified as a security response following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023—an event that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and led to over 250 hostages being taken into Gaza. In contrast, health authorities in Gaza report that more than 65,000 individuals have died due to ongoing Israeli military actions since then.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated a suggestion made previously—that the flotilla dock at Cyprus so aid could be distributed through channels like the Roman Catholic Church. However, organizers firmly rejected this proposal as they aim for direct access to Gaza. Tajani warned that approaching Israeli territorial waters poses significant risks and unpredictable consequences.

Navy ships from Italy and Spain are currently positioned near the flotilla ready to assist with rescue operations or humanitarian needs if necessary. The organizers emphasize that this mission serves not only as a humanitarian effort but also as a symbolic act of solidarity against the blockade affecting Gaza’s residents.
