The Greek shipowner Alberta Shipmanagement, which operates a fleet of tankers and bulk carriers, is venturing for the first time into the container ship sector with an order for two + two 1,900 TEU Bangkokmax units from the Chinese shipyard CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong.
“The new ships are expected to be delivered starting from early 2027. It is unclear whether Alberta has already secured charter contracts for these vessels,” according to Alphaliner.
The Athens-based company is backed by the Inglessis family, whose origins in shipping date back to 1875. Currently, the company controls a dozen tankers, from Very Large Crude Carriers, as well as eleven bulk carriers with capacities ranging from 37,000 to 180,000 tons. Furthermore, it has two 301,000-ton VLCCs under construction for delivery in 2027.
“Alberta is not the only Greek shipowner focused on tankers and bulk carriers that has recently diversified into the container sector. Minerva Marine (Martinos family) and Marla (Latsis family), historically known for their established operations in the dry and wet markets, have also entered the container ship sector, focusing on the acquisition of smaller vessels, between 1,700 and 3,000 TEU,” concluded Alphaliner.
