The port of Algeciras has hosted the ‘Port Leaders Mission’ event. Promoted by Maritime Policy Bureau and PR Ports with the support of the Inter-American Commission of Ports, its objective is to strengthen the ties between the port communities of Latin America and Spain. On this occasion, the Ibero-American delegation is composed of executives from ports and companies in the sector from Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela; while on the Spanish side, in addition to representatives from the Port Authority of Algeciras, the Chamber of Commerce, the Port Community Comport, and the Campus Bahía de Algeciras of the University of Cádiz have participated.
In addition to visiting facilities such as the Process Control Center of the port of Algeciras and the semi-automatic container terminal at Isla Verde Exterior, TTI Algeciras, the participants took part in a round table on institutional collaboration for the benefit of the port environment and attended presentations on the Green and Innovation Strategies of the APBA, the work being done by the port of Algeciras for the development, storage, and supply of alternative fuels; the European project European Port Alliance, as well as examples of port-city collaboration initiatives by the institution in the municipalities of its public port domain.
As Zulma Dinelli, CEO of PR Ports, pointed out, the ports on both sides of the Atlantic “currently face the same challenges, although we address them in different ways” and in today’s visit they want to learn “how Algeciras became a success story.” Dinelli also emphasized that ports cannot work in isolation, stating that “ports that collaborate are invincible.”
For his part, the president of the Port Authority of Algeciras, Gerardo Landaluce, reviewed the latest initiatives carried out by the institution in collaboration with Ibero-American ports and institutions, such as the Digital Interoperability project between the Central American Digital Trade Platform and the Port Community System of the port of Algeciras, as well as the Green and Digital Corridor project between Panama and the port of Algeciras, which will be presented in Brussels shortly, both integrated into the European Commission’s global Gateway strategy. Algeciras has been the last stop on a tour aimed at fostering intercontinental collaboration. Before arriving at the port of the Strait, the Port Leaders delegation visited the ports of Seville and Cádiz during the week, in addition to Puertos del Estado.
