The costs of aluminium smelters declined last week as alumina prices fell amid oversupply, while the power costs of smelters with captive thermal power plants may continue to grow due to rising coal prices.
The real-time cost of smelters dropped 67 /mt from a week ago to 17,888.8 /mt as of last Friday, while the real-time profit also shrank 92.8 /mt to 821 /mt as the SMM A00 aluminium prices fell to 18,710 /mt. Despite lower alumina prices, the rise in electricity prices will keep the total costs of smelters at highs. Smelters’ profits will fluctuate within a narrow range.
