In the statement made by the Ministry of National Defense it was said that; “The mine detected off the coast of Kefken was safely destroyed by SAS teams.”

The mines laid by Ukraine against Russian ships in the Black Sea and drifted away as a result of the storm continue to pose danger. A new mine was detected off Kefken, approximately 50 miles east from the Bosphorus.

The officials of the Turkish Shipowners’ Association said that an intervention was started for the detonation of the mine. The authorities stated, “The distance of the detected mine to the entrance of the Bosphorus is approximately 50 miles. Thus, the number of detected mines has increased to 6”.

On the other hand it is stated that the mines are strong enough to sink the coaster ship. According to the information conveyed by Turkish Shipowners’ Association General Coordinator Hüseyin Çınar, mines weighing up to 30 kg can instantly sink a coaster ship of 1,500-2,000 tons. In the Black Sea, mainly coaster type ships are being operated. The mines are also strong enough to inflict great damage on larger ships, depending on the point they hit.
