Barry Callebaut Group and Maersk have officially inaugurated their custom-built cocoa bean warehouse in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia.
The organizations established a ten-year collaboration agreement in 2023 to develop and manage this installation.
This represents Pasir Gudang’s inaugural multi-level ramp-access facility designed exclusively for cocoa bean storage. Covering more than 600,000 square feet, the facility ranks among the Asia Pacific region’s most extensive cocoa bean storage operations.
With capacity for approximately 40,000 metric tons of cocoa beans, the warehouse was custom-engineered to facilitate integrated supply chain operations with emphasis on operational efficiency and market responsiveness.
The facility incorporates sophisticated technology including Maersk’s advanced Warehouse Management System, providing real-time inventory monitoring, optimized operational workflows, and improved data transparency.
Additional features include LED illumination and natural ventilation systems designed for energy conservation.
This facility aligns with the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities and Malaysian Cocoa Board national initiatives to strengthen the regional Agri-commodity sector.
The installation sustains our progress, enhances competitiveness, and reinforces Malaysia’s position in the global cocoa industry.
Dr. Ramle Hj Kasin, Director General of the Malaysian Cocoa Board, stated that the installation will function as a central storage hub for globally sourced cocoa beans from Africa, Latin America, and Asia, supporting Barry Callebaut’s expansion objectives to fulfill customer requirements throughout Asia and internationally.
Alain Freymond, President, Global Cocoa at Barry Callebaut, commented that in Malaysia, this encompasses cocoa bean importation via maritime transport through Port of Tanjung Pelepas and trucking and rail transportation between port and warehouse facilities.
Ditlev Blicher, President Asia Pacific at Maersk, also noted that the official inauguration ceremony for one of Asia Pacific’s largest cocoa bean storage facilities assembled leadership from both organizations, local stakeholders, and partners to commemorate this achievement and reaffirm their dedication to regional innovation, sustainability, and growth initiatives.
