Grounding of a cargo ship in the port of Moudouion occurred yesterday afternoon, with no injuries or sea pollution. The captain was arrested and departure was prohibited until the issuance of a seaworthiness certificate.
During the afternoon hours yesterday, officials of the Port Authority of Moudouion were informed that a cargo (C/V) ship under the flag of Barbados, had run aground on sandy shallows during the procedure of departure preparation, in the sea area of the port of Moudouion.
The ship was set to depart for Ireland loaded with 5,002 metric tons of limestone, with a crew of thirteen (13) persons. From the incident there were no injuries, no sea pollution or fuel leakage was observed, nor water ingress into the ship, while minor abrasions were caused to the quay.
By the Moudouion Port Station conducting the preliminary investigation, the 34-year-old foreign Captain (citizen of Turkey) of the C/V was arrested for violation of article 277 of the Penal Code “Causing a shipwreck” and article 378 of the Penal Code “Damage of foreign property”, while the departure of the ship was prohibited until the submission of a seaworthiness certificate by the attending surveyor.
