BMT unveils hybrid crew transfer vessel design

Must read

BMT used the 2022 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans to unveil the design of a fully hybrid 32-m crew transfer vessel (CTV)

BMT lead naval architect Jonathan Cotgreave said, “With this design we are pushing the envelope, offering a significant steppingstone towards achieving net zero.”

The company did not provide any details of the propulsion system or how hybrid propulsion is achieved but did state that the design draws on BMT’s experience designing vessels of this type to ensure excellent seakeeping, using a hull featuring a Z-Bow, which is proven on many of the BMT in-service vessels.

Spaces around the vessel have been carefully arranged to improve workflow. The wheelhouse has been designed to offer excellent visibility to facilitate crew transfers. The superstructure is resiliently mounted and significantly reduces noise and vibration.

At 32 m, the vessel’s size has been increased compared to earlier designs for a larger cargo deck area and increased load capacity. BMT said this will enable the vessel to play an increased role during the windfarm construction phases, with the ability to carry more equipment in support of the larger ships.

The new design also features BMT’s patented active fender system, which enhances transfer capability in a range of sea states, enhances the safety of windfarm technicians and reduces the potential for impact damage to the vessel or turbine structure.
