The Port of Itaqui this week received the Hafnia Languedoc, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered tanker to dock at its facilities.
The operation, led by Transpetro, marks an advance in the use of alternative fuels in navigation and “reinforces the port’s commitment to sustainability,” according to Porto do Itaqui.
“Built in 2023, the modern dual-fuel vessel can operate on both LNG and traditional fuels, achieving significant environmental benefits: a 20% reduction in CO? emissions, near-total elimination of sulfur, and an 80% reduction in other pollutants,” it added.
This initiative aligns with the Port of Itaqui’s Decarbonization Plan, which seeks to reduce the carbon footprint through concrete goals and actions.
According to Bruno Mota, Planning Director, the Hafnia Languedoc symbolizes the energy transition in navigation and strengthens the port facility’s strategy for a low-carbon, efficient, and innovative future.
“Its arrival also highlights the role of the Port of Itaqui as a driver for the adoption of alternative fuels in the maritime sector,” concluded the port authority’s message.
