Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has completed the classification of the Neoliner Origin, a new-generation wind-powered /roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo vessel developed by the French company Neoline, BV said in a statement.

Built at the RMK Marine shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey, the Neoliner Origin is described as the first commercial sailing Ro-Ro vessel of its size and capacity to enter service.

The 136-meter-long and 24.2-meter-wide ship is equipped with two 76-meter-high foldable Solidsail carbon masts designed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, supporting nearly 3,000 square meters of rigid sails. It has 1,200 linear meters of cargo space, equivalent to 265 TEU, and can carry a maximum of 5,300 tons. The vessel can also accommodate 12 passengers in six double cabins.

BV oversaw the classification process from design assessment to construction surveys and final trials.

The ship was officially delivered on September 26 after adjustments and performance testing. It left Turkey on September 29 and is expected to arrive at the Loire estuary for inauguration and final preparations before its first transatlantic voyage, planned for mid-October, from Montoir-de-Bretagne to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Baltimore.

According to BV, the vessel will significantly reduce greenhouse gas, sulfur oxide (SOx), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during ocean crossings compared to conventional Ro-Ro ships.
