A cargo ship collided south of Symi in the early hours of Sunday, causing a mobilization of the Port Authority.
In the early hours of Sunday, the Port Authority of Symi was informed by the Captain of a cargo (C/G) ship under a Greek flag, that it collided in the first early hours yesterday, with a rocky point, south of Symi.
The C/G ship, which had sailed from Rhodes with destination the port “TSIGKELI” of Volos loaded with 487 M.T. Scrap, sailed under its own power to the port “PEDI” of Symi, where the existence of two fractures on its right bow section, above the waterline, was confirmed.
No injuries were reported from the incident, no marine pollution was observed, and there was no water ingress. The Symi Port Authority prohibited the departure of the C/G ship until the submission of a certificate of seaworthiness from the ship surveyor monitoring the vessel.
As a captain, I cannot help but observe that such collisions are repeated with a worrying frequency – almost always due to negligence on the bridge.
