Carnival Corporation is to implement a new Decarbonisation Modelling Service to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its cruise fleet, creating digital models of its vessels to analyse operations and identify potential areas for optimisation.
The service, provided by Wärtsilä, will initially establish an optimal decarbonisation path for the 330m cruise ship ‘Regal Princess’, before being expanded to the rest of the Carnival fleet.
A digital model of ‘Regal Princess’ will be created by combining operational data from several different sources, with Wärtsilä’s machine-learning algorithms also delivering an analysis of vessel operational data.
The model will be used to simulate the impact of several potential emissions reduction technologies, with a particular focus on electric smokeless start systems, hybrid power and energy storage. The simulations will aim to identify the most beneficial retrofittable solution while minimising the required installation work should a decision be made to go ahead with new technologies.
