Selective was the investment activity of Greek shipowners in July, a fact reflected in both the primary and secondary market.

According to the shipbroking house Allied, investments in the newbuilding market prevailed over investments in second-hand vessels of all types (bulk carriers, containerships, LNG carriers and tankers). More specifically, investments in containerships and LNG carriers concerned exclusively the primary market, while on the other hand investments were recorded in both newbuilding and second-hand bulk carriers.

Looking further, Allied points out that, during July, Greek shipowners mainly acted as “sellers” in the second-hand market. Although Greek activity in bulk carriers was balanced between the two sides of transactions, in tankers they exclusively carried out sales. As regards second-hand bulk carriers, purchases focused mainly on younger vessels, while sales were focused on older vessels, reflecting a trend of modernizing the Greek-owned bulk carrier fleet last month.

Regarding newbuildings, Allied observes that Greek investment interest was strongly focused on bulk carriers, specifically on the larger sizes. This was followed by containerships and, finally, LNG carriers and MR tankers.
