The Chennai Corporation has commenced an action plan to remove the encroaching buildings right on the beach in two posh localities of the city on the East coast road leading to Mahabalipuram. The area taken up for action is between Neelangarai and Uthandi.
In their notice the corporation has alleged that some of the buildings were constructed in violation of the coastal regulation zone norms. The civic body has identified around 700 buildings which are constructed in violation of the norms.
Lock and seal notice was issued to the owners of the unauthorised buildings
In the notices served to the residents, the corporation said the owners of the unauthorised buildings did not produce an approved plan copy in the stipulated time and hence a lock and seal notice was issued.
The residents are currently engaged in a court case with the corporation in the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over the construction of a storm water drain project in the areas adjoining the beach.
