Authorities from the Philippines have confirmed that at least one crew member had passed away, while three others have been injured, when their container vessel had caught fire as it was sailing the seawaters in Talisay City in Cebu on 17 April, Easter Sunday.

Representatives from Bantay Dagat have confirmed to the DYMR – Cebu, a state-run radio station, that they were able to retrieve the body of a crew member of MV General Romulo.

The victim’s identity is being verified. The Philippine Coast Guard in Central Visayas (PCG-7) confirmed that three crew members of the ill-fated ship had also experienced injuries.

They were rushed to the Cebu South Hospital for treatment. The ship has 20 crew members. Of them, 16 could be rescued successfully. Initial reports from PCG-7 reflected that the ship’s crew had sent out a distress signal at around 9:50 a.m. while sailing toward the Cebu City port.

PCG-7 added that at that time, the vessel, operated and owned by Lorenzo Shipping Corp., was off the coasts of Barangay Pooc, Talisay City.

The vessel was loaded with 2,218 tons of cargo from Metro Manila. About five vessels had responded to the incident and continued dousing the fire. Authorities are in the process of investigating on the cause behind the fire.
