China is anticipated to be at the forefront of global propylene capacity additions by 2030. This growth is expected to be driven by China’s vast manufacturing base and a robust domestic demand for propylene, which is fuelled by the country’s expansive sectors such as automotive, petrochemical, and textile.
By 2030, there will be a total of 32 projects in China, which are projected to increase the overall capacity by 22.87 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Among these, 18 projects are currently under construction, with an estimated capacity addition of 12.61mtpa. Additionally, there are 14 projects in the preconstruction stage, expected to add a total capacity of 10.27mtpa during the outlook period.
The major capacity addition in the country is from a project in preconstruction – ‘Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Propylene Plant 2’, which is situated in the city of Longkou. It is expected to come online in 2030, with a capacity of 2mtpa. Shandong Yulong Petrochemical is the operator of the plant with a 100% equity stake.
Meanwhile, ‘SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Propylene Plant’ and ‘Fujian Yongrong New Materials Company Putian Propylene Plant 2’ are two noteworthy projects in the state of Fujian. These projects are anticipated to commence operations in 2026 and 2029, respectively, boasting a capacity of 1.02mtpa and 1.10mtpa. Additionally, the ‘Oriental Energy Maoming Propylene Plant 3’ and ‘Oriental Energy Maoming Propylene Plant 4’ in Guangdong are significant capacity expansions in the country, each with a capacity of 1mtpa. These plants are projected to begin operations in 2028.
