Yara Clean Ammonia, Yara International, CMB.TECH, and North Sea Container Line have jointly announced the official start of construction of the world’s first renewable ammonia-powered container vessel, Yara Eyde.
The steel-cutting ceremony held in early September is a significant milestone in efforts to decarbonize short-sea shipping and prove the viability of ammonia as a low-emission fuel.
The 1,200 TEU capacity vessel, which will serve the Oslo–Porsgrunn–Bremerhaven–Rotterdam route, will connect industrial clusters in Northern Europe with sustainable logistics solutions. The vessel is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuel-powered container ships.
The vessel is planned to enter service in 2026.
Hans Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia, said, “This is more than the start of a vessel, it is the beginning of a new chapter in the decarbonization of maritime transport. Yara Eyde embodies our goal of making low-emission ammonia a reality in maritime transport and steering the industry towards emission-reducing solutions.”
Bente Hetland, CEO of North Sea Container Line, stated, “Yara Eyde is an excellent example of how close collaboration along the value chain can bring cutting-edge technology into commercial operation and provide tangible benefits for both cargo owners and customers.”
