A small installation on ships around the world has the potential to provide shipping companies with large financial gain while helping them to take better care of the climate. A strong collaboration between leading shipping companies and experts in advanced measuring equipment that measures greenhouse gas emissions from ships could be a game changer for the shipping industry, which faces new climate requirements in the coming years.
Participants in the technological co-operation, known as MAMII (The Methane Abatement in Maritime innovation), include shipping companies CoolCo, MOL. The company Green Instruments, an expert in high-tech equipment for emission control, is behind the technical setup in the new software platformGreenView Emissions Insight, which is the centrepiece of the collaboration. The key advantage of the new equipment is that shipping companies can measure greenhouse gas emissions in real time.
“This gives shipping companies a wide range of opportunities to optimise operations on their ships. Shipping companies get very precise data that can teach them a lot about the operation of their own systems. They gain insights that enable them to make better decisions, which can give them a financial advantage and ensure that they can comply with the requirements to limit emissions of e.g. CO2 and methane,” says Casper Nørgaard Jensen, Global Sales Director at Green Instruments.
For example, shipping companies receive data on engine emissions compared to engine power and fuel consumption, so they can see in real time how much the ships are emitting.
“By understanding the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions, engine performance and fuel consumption, shipping companies can make concrete choices based on accurate data rather than the highly uncertain calculations used in the past. “Our point is ‘what you measure is what you get’, and the measuring equipment can ultimately lead to major savings for shipping companies,”says Casper Nørgaard Jensen.

New requirements increase the need for measuring equipment
In recent years, shipping companies have been faced with demands to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and in the coming years the requirements will become stricter. As a result, shipping companies have a strong incentive to find ways to optimise the operation of their ships and to invest in equipment that enables them to accurately document their emissions. This is one of the reasons why leading shipping companies are interested in collaborating on new innovative measuring equipment.
“We are seeing a wave of regulations that increase the requirements for shipping companies, and there is no doubt that by utilising the technology, they can achieve great gains in the operation of their ships and avoid paying taxes on their greenhouse gas emissions in whole or in part,” says Casper Nørgaard Jensen.
The parties have tested the new equipment, which will be installed on several ships from different shipping companies in the coming months. Green Instruments expects the equipment to be gradually rolled out as more partners gain experience with GreenView Emissions Insight, and the company has already received a number of enquiries from existing and potential new customers who want to learn more about the technology.
