Subpar fabrication and poor-quality welding are leading causes of corrosion issues in scrubbers, and Sverdrup Steel technical director Raymond Jaegersen discusses three keys to mitigating corrosion issues in a scrubber.
First, he tells Riviera Maritime Media executive editor and head of business relations Edwin Lampert, you should collaborate with a materials supplier; second, choose a fabricator with knowledge of welding, pickling and all that is involved in the construction of a scrubber; and third, have staff that are capable of following the procedures management has set up.
Mr Jaegersen said when scrubbers were first entering the market in 2017 and 2018, “I saw that the knowledge base was very limited.”
He was initially “very scared” because of the inexperience with working with these high-alloy materials.
However, he said, “Over the last two years, they have improved and also the quality has improved.” Added Mr Jaegersen, “All the faults I have seen are related to workmanship.”
Mr Jaegersen presented on ‘Understanding the corrosion performance issues of scrubbers’ at Maritime Air Pollution and Fuel Technologies Americas 2022, which was held 21-22 April 2022 in Houston, Texas.
