Chinese shipping group COSCO SHIPPING, Korean shipbuilder SHI and technology vendor Kongsberg Digital have all had their ship data collection and management processes certified by DNV, based on the class society’s newly published D-INF (data collection infrastructure and vessel connectivity) class notation.
DNV’s D-INF notation was created to assist in dealing with the challenge of the lack of standardisation often present in a vessel’s data infrastructure. The notation sets out specific requirements for the data collection set-up on board, including servers, data relay components and remote access, addressing the entire ship-to-shore communication framework.

DNV implemented the notation as part of Approval in Principle (AiP) projects – the first stage of formal type approval – granted to COSCO, SHI and Kongsberg.
The COSCO SHIPPING pilot formed part of a wider project with DNV to develop an onshore smart ship data management centre to aggregate data from a range of vessels across its fleet. The project with SHI focused on the infrastructure and data stream of its SVESSEL BIG system, while the Kongsberg pilot focused on its Vessel Insight service.
