COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Begins Construction Of Advanced 14,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Containership

Must read

CO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) has officially begun construction on the first of twelve 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessels for COSCO SHIPPING Lines. This milestone marks a major step toward the company’s green transformation, showcasing China’s growing leadership in clean-energy shipbuilding and its support for global low-carbon shipping routes.

Next-Generation Green Vessel Technology Takes Shape

The newly initiated vessel measures 335.9 meters in length and 51 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of around 13,700 TEU. It features a state-of-the-art methanol dual-fuel propulsion system powered by WinGD main engines and generators. When using green methanol, the vessel significantly cuts carbon emissions and meets the International Maritime Organization’s strict environmental standards.

The vessel incorporates advanced technologies including intelligent vessel management systems, the world’s largest permanent-magnet shaft generator, an energy-saving concealed bulbous bow, and high-efficiency propellers. These innovations give it four key advantages safety, greenness, energy efficiency, and intelligent performance enabling it to meet EEDI Phase III requirements and setting a benchmark for modern container vessel design.

Boosting Global Green Shipping Routes and Regional Trade

The launch of construction marks a shift for 14,000 TEU vessels from traditional fuels to methanol, aligning with the global push for carbon reduction. Once operational, the vessel will sail primarily on the Far East–Americas route, enhancing the sustainability of one of the world’s busiest trade corridors.

This development comes as COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry continues expanding its methanol-powered fleet portfoliofr om a 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessel already delivered, to ongoing construction of a 114,000 DWT tanker and a 325,000 DWT ore carrier. COSCO is rapidly building a full range of green-energy vessels across multiple ship types.

The announcement also comes one year after the Port of Chancay in Peru began operations. A vessel built by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry played a symbolic role at its opening, and the port has since grown into Peru’s third-largest, strengthening China–Latin America trade links. Along this increasingly active maritime route, COSCO’s new green vessels are providing clean-energy momentum to bilateral trade.

The start of construction on COSCO SHIPPING’s 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessel marks a major step in the global transition toward low-carbon maritime transport. Through technological innovation, diversified green-fuel vessel development, and growing international trade routes, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) is reinforcing China’s role in shaping the future of sustainable shipping. As more green vessels enter service, they will continue driving progress across global supply chains and supporting cleaner, more efficient maritime operations.
