Cyprus: Memorandum of Understanding between the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Transport of Qatar

The new Memorandum marks a new chapter of cooperation between Cyprus and Qatar and is part of the government policy for enhancing relations with Qatar in all sectors.

The cooperation covers, among others, issues of maritime security, protection of the marine environment, digitalization and the welfare of seafarers, reflecting the two countries’ shared commitment to a sustainable and innovative maritime future. At the same time, Cyprus and Qatar share the vision of being regional hubs in shipping and in providing services to the shipping industry.

The Memorandum confirms the mutual will of the two Governments to further strengthen their cooperation, defining its framework both on a bilateral level and within the framework of international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

On the sidelines of the Conference, the Deputy Minister of Shipping held a series of bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Shipping of Greece and Bahrain, as well as with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism.

With the Minister of Shipping of Greece, Mr. Vasilis Kikilias, the challenges of global shipping were discussed and the excellent Cyprus-Greece cooperation within the framework of the Intergovernmental Cooperation was confirmed.

With the Minister of Transport of Bahrain, H.E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, recent developments were reviewed following the meeting of the two Ministers in Saudi Arabia, as well as joint actions that will form an integral part of the Memorandum of Understanding on shipping matters, which is expected to be finalized and signed soon.

Finally, the Deputy Minister of Shipping met with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, where the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU as well as issues concerning the competitiveness of EU shipping were discussed.
