Danske Maritime: Smart decision to build new environmental ships in Denmark

Must read

Danske Maritime praises the government’s decision to allow Danish shipyards to build four new marine environment and minelaying vessels for the Navy. According to Director Jenny Braat, it is both a boost for the Defense and a strengthening of Denmark’s maritime position

“It is very positive that we are now getting started on the first part of the fleet plan. It is good for Denmark that new capacities for the Navy and our preparedness are being given a push – and at the same time good for the maritime industry, which is ready to take on the task. That these ships are to be produced in Denmark means that we are strengthening both the Defense, our marine environment preparedness, our national supply security, and our maritime strength position. It is a very wise decision that will have positive societal effects for many years to come,” says Jenny Braat.

The consortium Danske Flådestøtteskibe K/S – consisting of OSK Design, Hvide Sande Shipyard and Karstensens Skibsværft – has been chosen as the supplier, and the contract is expected to be signed later this year.

Minister for Social Security and Emergency Management Torsten Schack Pedersen (V) is also pleased with the decision:
“The current ships are often affected by faults and breakdowns. With the new vessels, we can strengthen our preparedness and respond quickly to oil or chemical spills.”

Danske Maritime emphasizes that the fleet plan should continue at a high pace, so that Denmark can both strengthen its maritime capacities in light of the security policy situation and utilize the potential in Danish shipbuilding.
