According to foreign media reports, on the morning of August 13 local time, a collision occurred between a gravel carrier and a yacht on the sea near Tsukumi City, Oita Prefecture, Japan, resulting in the death of a 70-year-old man aboard the yacht.
The Japan Coast Guard suspects the captain of the gravel carrier of professional negligence resulting in death due to failing to take appropriate measures to avoid the collision. The captain has been arrested.
Around 8:15 a.m. on August 13, the collision occurred in the waters near Hoto Island, Tsukumi City, Oita Prefecture. The yacht sank after the collision.
The Coast Guard immediately dispatched vessels for search operations and found one person in the nearby waters around 10 a.m. The accident caused Dr. Yamamoto Makoto (70 years old) from Oita City, who was on the yacht, to be thrown into the sea. He was rescued approximately two hours later but was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
The Coast Guard continued searching for any other individuals who might have been thrown into the sea.
However, based on accounts from Yamamoto’s family and other informed sources, it was learned that Mr. Yamamoto had departed alone from the port in Saiki City, Oita Prefecture, in the early hours of August 13.
As a result, the Coast Guard has concluded its search and is conducting a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Japan Coast Guard believes that, despite good visibility at sea at the time of the accident, appropriate measures to avoid the collision were not taken, leading to the professional negligence resulting in death of the captain of the transport vessel “Dai 38 Teimaru,” Mochizuki Yuki (28 years old). Currently, the captain has been arrested on suspicion of traffic hazard.
It is reported that the gravel carrier involved is over 60 meters long, weighs approximately 490 tons, and had five crew members on board, none of whom were injured. During questioning by the Oita Coast Guard, the captain stated that the sea was calm and visibility was good at the time of the incident.
The Coast Guard is questioning the other four crew members aboard the gravel carrier to further investigate the cause of the accident in detail.
